15 players make up a rugby union team (as opposed to a 13-man rugby league team): 8 forwards and 7 backs, with as many as 7 replacements. Here is a brief summary of the positions.

Fullback – this player remains at the back of the field as the last line of defence. They are responsible for catching high kicks and may be part of counter-attacks as well.

Wings – these players are the finishers, and are usually the quickest on the team, ranging from small to large in size.

Centres – centres are typically involved greatly in both offence and defence, requiring the abilities to break through the opposition, pass the ball, and have a strong tackle.

Fly-half – the fly-half is generally the player who makes the decisions, requiring quick thinking during the game and excellent communitcation skills. They are also usually the kicker of the team, as well.

Scrum-half – the scrum half is usually at the centre of everything. They are usually the first defensive tackler and are often responsible for keeping the ball moving.

Props – these guys are responsible to support the hooker in the scrum, as well as the jumpers. They help give the main power in the push forward, requiring them to be strong and heavy.

Hooker – one of the most dangerous positions, they hook the ball in the scrum with their feet, assisted by the props. They also lead the attack moves.

Locks – the locks usually do a lot of jumping, and are often the tallest on the team, responsible for catching the ball and getting it to the scrum half at line-outs.

Flankers – flankers have few set responsibilities, but players in this position must be dynamic, heavily involved in the scrum and trying to tackle the opposition if it is lost.

Number Eight – combining mobility and strength, this player is at the rear of the scrum, using his feet to control its movement. At times, they may be given the opportunity to run like a back, as well.
