In rugby, the gameplay itself is up to the players, but without a good coach, the players would likely have a hard time knowing what they are supposed to do. And a good coach can not only bring a team to victory, but also help the players have a much more enjoyable time playing. Here are a few aspects that should be applied to any coaching position:

Respect. A good, effective coach must have the respect of the players. Without this, a coach has little control over what the team might do, and they will be less willing to go through practice moves or take advice on how to play the game.

Relationships. A coach must be able to be friendly without becoming friends with the players and developing a bias towards or away from some of the players. Many high-profile coaches will seem very impersonal to avoid this.

Understanding. In order for a coach to be effective, he must understand the game well, in every aspect. It is important to know when things should happen, how decisions will affect the team as a whole, and realising which players and skills need development.

Vision. A good coach will know where the team stands now and have a vision for success. Typically, a coach will take a look at key areas of the game, and set goals that will motivate the players. Most of these goals will be specific to things that physically happen in the game, like kicking accuracy and turnovers, but may also be focused on team development and teamwork.

Keep in mind that a good coach doesn’t appear instantly. You must develop your coaching ability and really focus on what you personally want to accomplish with your team. Understand the game, the players, and the team, and you will be well on your way to becoming a great coach.
